Welcome to Dinkelboden – Your Supplier of Spelt ProductsDinkelboden is a little family company located in Åre, Jämtland, in Northern Sweden. We have grown from selling spelt products in a little shop in the village of Duved to becoming wholesale dealers supplying ICA supermarkets throughout Sweden. We believe in supplying products of the highest possible quality and use Bauländer Spelz and Frankenkorn which are species consisting of 100% spelt. Our spelt is cultivated in Southern Germany by carefully selected contract farmers. It is then processed into various different products such as flour, muesli, rice and pasta. A number of our products are organically cultivated.
About SpeltSpelt is a grain which still has the same qualities it had thousands of years ago as no scientific adaptation has been made to its cultivation. Compared to wheat, spelt has a number of differences in nutritional value: Spelt is more easily digested as its gluten consists of a higher number of water soluble proteins. Spelt's protein content, at 13%, is higher than that of wheat. Spelt contains larger amounts of iron, copper, magnesium and zink. Spelt contains more energy than wheat, and higher amounts of healthy fatty acids. Spelt contains considerably more vitamin B than wheat.
Thick, Protective HuskSpelt has a particularly thick husk which protects the nutritious grain, and also makes it more resistant to harmful insects and atmospheric changes. In addition, the husk protects the grain from being damaged while stored. Spelt has a well-developed root system and grows best in poor and sandy soil. Therefore it does not need much fertiliser. The spelt grain consists of 30% husk, which means that the yield is lower than normal wheat, making spelt more expensive. The husks contain high levels of silicon and are used to fill pillows and mattresses. These are then used in the treatment of migraines, and muscle and joint pain.
UseSpelt products can be found in many forms such as whole grain, whole grain flour, flour, flakes, semolina and pasta. Spelt flour can be used as a replacement for wheat flour in both baking and cooking. Hint! Try pancakes made with spelt flour!
HistorySpelt is a crop which was among the earliest grains cultivated by human beings. Although spelt is a hexaploid wheat species, it cannot be compared to the wheat which is cultivated today. There is evidence that spelt existed in Asia 5000 years ago and it is thought that it is from this region that spelt spread to Europe. Spelt has been cultivated in Sweden since the Stone Age. During the Viking era, the cultivation of spelt on the mainland was discontinued, but it continued being cultivated on the island of Gotland until the 1960s. The cultivation of spelt in Sweden was recommenced in the early 1990s, primarily on Gotland. Spelt has been cultivated continuously during this period in continental Europe.
